Does Coconut Oil Help Treat or Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease?

As you can see from the Google search trends chart above, the idea that coconut oil could help prevent or decrease the effects of Alzheimer’s got a lot of interest back in early 2012. The reason for the interest was some research that came out showing a possible link. More recently, in 2015, Fernando and colleagues published a review article in British Journal of Nutrition that weighed all of the available evidence across multiple studies in different journals.

New Research: Eating Carrots, Drinking Green Tea May Reverse Alzheimer’s Effects

I haven’t read the original study, but this finding is consistent with the idea that we should eat better to avoid or overcome degenerative diseases of the brain (and the rest of the body). I wholeheartedly agree. I don’t know whether there is anything particularly magical or special about green tea or carrots specifically, but generally adding more vitamins from healthy vegetables has to be a good thing.

Weston A. Price Approach to Treating Inflammation

While the modern medical community may not endorse Dr. Price’s research, his work has become so popular with those who choose a more natural, non-traditional approach that it warrants closer inspection. While Dr. Price’s research was really well-done and widely accepted at the time, 80 years later people have moved on. A big difference between Dr. Price and modern nutrition best practices was his advocacy for eating fats. Note, however, that he’s not advocating for Crisco, palm oil, canola oil or any of the modern types of fats that are widely available.

Inflammation Causes Alzheimer’s?

This well-written article in Scientific American points to inflammation as the culprit behind Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. I personally found it to be really interesting because I’ve recently heard inflammation linked to various other diseases, including heart disease. What is the cause of the inflammation? It seems to vary and be unclear. The article points to age, being overweight, and stress as some potential inflammation causes.
